My Lovely Locks

I am my Hair. Ever changing, self defined, natural, and has a mind of its own.

My Natural Hair

Yes I refer to my hair as Locks but no, I do not have actual locs.  I've been chemical free now since my last perm in August 2007 and have learned to embrace by natural hair texture when I said goodbye to the flat iron and braid extensions on December 23, 2011.  Here is where I keep all of my hair product wishes, reviews and resources.  Thanks to Youtuber Napturals85 and Blogger Curly Nikki, the natural hair game isn't as frightening as I thought it would be :).

Current Regimen:
Every week I will...
  1. Section hair into 4 and deep condition with my homemade coconut oil DC (see below for ingredients) and the Huetiful Hair Steamer.
  2. Wash (in sections) with my current cleanser of choice.
  3. Using a cotton t-shirt, remove excess water from my hair
  4. Apply Naps Silky moisturizer to sections followed by the Shea butter styler and twist into 8 sections
  5. Sleep on a satin pillow case and dry overnight
  6. In the AM, remove twists and style as usual.
Normally I will rock my twist out in a puff (securing my edges with headbands) or just leave it out.  To maintain my twist out, most nights I spritz a tiny bit of water pop on a shower cap and satin bonnet and go to bed, but if I'm feeling lazy or feel my hair is thoroughly moisturized I just put on the satin bonnet and call it a night.

I do not have different regimens for the seasons, I just add what I feel is missing to my hair when I see fit.  The products I use for the most part stay the same but occasionally I will switch up, however they will ALWAYS be paraben, mineral oil, sulfate and silicone free products.

My Fave Items
  • Huetiful Hair and facial Steamer $124.95 behuetiful.com
    • Love it: I know, I know $125 is steep for any hair contraption but I love my steamer.  I really do feel as if it helps conditioners penetrate your hair better and is a GREAT alternative for those who want to avoid dry heat in fear of damaging their hair.  I will say this though, shower steam will probably do just the same trick but for me I like feeling like I'm in my own little spa by using the steamer :).
  • USDA Terresentials Organic Lavender Mud wash
    • Love it:  So I go back and forth on Terresentials all the time, but the bottom line is that I love the smell and how it doesn't leave my hair feeling stripped down or dry.  I would recommend you try it for youself to see if its something you could add to my regimen. Click here for my first review of it.
  • Nap's Modified Homemade Thick and Silky Moisturizing Creme http://www.youtube.com/user/Naptural85?feature=watch.#p/u/63/X3Ok14CgADM
    • Gotta Have It:  O...M...G this thing left my hair feeling like silk.  After I washed my hair, I saturated it with this stuff twisted it up and went to bed.  The next day I could have sworn I had some Indian in my blood (and I mean the India Indian) my hair was so soft.  This is definitely a keeper and its a DIYer!
Products/ Methods Tried
  • Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo and Conditioner
    • No Bueno: The shampoo actually dries out my hair ::gasp:: but the price was good and it seemed natural enough so I gave it a go.  I'll use the rest of it then move on to something else.  I also discovered that the shampoo has amodimethicone that contains a silicone which can dry out hair over time and the conditioner has a vegetable protein which may be good for most but I'm starting to think I might have slightly protein sensitive hair :(.
  • Homemade Mayo & Avocado DC w/ Honey
    • One Night Stand: No special results, didn't hate it, didn't love it but glad I tried(again might be protein sensitive).
  • Tea Tree Wen Cleansing Conditioner
    • Love It:  Real good product but waaahay too expensive for my taste. I know it works for me but its better I find a cheaper alternative.
  • Lush Caca Rouge Henna
    • One Night Stand: Click here for my full review
Wish List:
  • Mehandi Henna
    • Tried the Lush henna and it didn't go so great, but I still have hope for henna yet.  Next time I'll be trying this one that Curly Nikki suggest
  • Shea Moister Line
    • I've only heard good things about this line for the most part but the main reason I want to try it because its natural AND cheap!
  • Sunny Isle Jamaicain Black Caster Oil $9.99 jamaicanblackcastoroil.com
    • I use caster oil already but not the black one.  Heard good things so when my bottle runs out (which may be for a while) I'll give it a try.
  • Elucence Shampoo and Conditioner curlmart.com
    • Recently discovered it contains parabens which may not bother some but on MY natual hair journey I want only NATURAL stuff.
  • Ouidad double detangler $24
    • So to last me until I mustered up the courage to sped $24 dollars on a comb I bought a cheap wide tooth one from the beauty supply store.  Long story short I fell in love with it, so why waste the money on that if I already found my miracle worker?

  1. I'm going to have to try the Modified Homemade Thick, Silky, and Creamy Moisturizing Creme.
